POINTS OF ORIGIN: What is Creation Science?

by Dr. Glenn Jackson

Let's start out with what it is not. Creation science is not evolution. That has to be said, because a lot of people think that creation and evolution do not disagree with each other.

It depends on what you mean by creation and evolution. This is a touchy subject, so we have to make sure that nobody gets the wrong idea about what we say. There are many different ideas among creationists and evolutionists. There are the atheistic evolutionists, who believe that God doesn't exist. There are theistic evolutionists, who believe that God created all things, but that His way of doing this was pretty much the way that Charles Darwin explained it.

Most evolutionists today believe in punctuated equilibrium, which says that evolution happened in fits and starts rather than gradually. Nearly all evolutionists believe that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

What do creationists believe? Theistic evolutionists often say they are creationists, because they believe in a Creator. Progressive creationists believe that when species become extinct, the Creator makes new ones to replace them. Some creationists believe that the days in Genesis One were not 24-hour days, but may have been millions of years long.

Some believe that much of Genesis is only a story that gives us a picture of the character of God and His acts of creation, and is not literally true. These are the old-earth creationists, and talk about billions of years, like the evolutionists do.

Young-earth creationists believe that the earth and the universe are only about 6000 years old. These include what may be called the Biblical literalist creationists. They believe that the acts of creation that are described in Genesis are literally true.

This column will be written solely from the Biblical literalist creation viewpoint. That is this author's viewpoint. The reason for writing this column is to help to encourage others who have that same belief. Always keep this in mind, because I will.

Science knowledge grows so quickly. With every new discovery, evolutionists will say that new discoveries helps to prove their theory. Really, most of the proofs can be just the way that they are, without evolution being true. Nobody mentions this. As a matter of fact, the only way that these proofs can easily look like they are in favor of evolution is if you already believe in evolution.

If you believe that Genesis is literally true, then you should know that there is plenty of cause for encouragement in every one of the new discoveries that is made. That's what this column will be about.
